Shirley Mae Potts McNary Moss was born on April 12, 1948, to William Lee Potts, Sr. And Lula Mae Pennington. She accepted Christ at an early age and attended New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. Shirley graduated from Central High School and attended Lockyear Community College. Shirley married Earl T. McNary, Sr. In 1964 and had 6 children. She later married William (Bill) Moss and added 3 more to that total.
Shirley enjoyed attending church and at an early age, she served as a pianist on occasion. She was a member of the choir at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church for many years. Shirley also had a love for God's word and for many years was part of a daily prayer line with members of the Mother's Board from First Ebenezer Baptist Church.
Shirley grew up with foster kids that her grandmother, Alice Miller, raised. In her later years, she became an active member of Memorial Baptist Church until her health worsened. Shirley and her husband Bill became licensed foster parents, and eventually adopted 6 additional children. In 1999, Shirley was honored by the Evansville Black Women's Task Force for her outstanding service in Motherhood.
Shirley loved playing bingo and prior to her illness that is where you could find her with her best friend, Wendy Bryant. She also enjoyed going on vacation, doing word search puzzles and the adult coloring books. As a young girl, Shirley loved fried chicken backs, and that never changed. She collected dolls and together with her late husband, Bill, collected angels. She loved going to church and praising God.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband William (Bill) Moss, Sr., her father, William Lee Potts, Sr., her mothers, Lula Mae Pennington and Anna Pearl Potts, her grandparents Alice and Arque Miller, three brothers, Steven, Sherman, and Wayne, her son William Moss, Jr., her daughter Sparkle Moss, and her son-in-law Larry Pauley, Jr.
Shirley gained her heavenly wings on March 12, 2022, surrounded by her children. She leaves to cherish her memory seven handsome sons, Herschel McNary, Earl (Teresa) McNary, Jr., DeMonzio Morris Moss, Nathaniel Morris Moss, Antonio Moss, Aaron Moss, and Gavin (Rana) Johnson, seven beautiful daughters, Alice Wickliffe, Ruth (Bruce) Howard, Pam Pauley, Roselyn Coleman, DeVonna (Antwan) Wallace, Timara Moss, and Shereese Moss. She also leaves four sisters, Maria McMiller (Roosevelt), Markitta Nickerson (Gerald), Faye Alice Potts, and Tina Abernathy (Raymond), and two brothers William Lee Potts, Jr., and Colby Potts, Sr. (Kim), and four foster sisters, Dorothy Harris (Clifford), Virginia Swope (Donald), Robert Coleman, Linda Bryant, and Tamara Coleman who preceded her in death, a host of grandchildren and great- grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A visitation will be held Thursday 9 to 11 am with the funeral to follow at 11:00 am at Memorial Baptist Church.
