S Sammie Louise Smith

December 7, 1922 — December 29, 2015

I, Sammie Louise Smith, heard the Lord calling my name to be with him on Tuesday, December 29, 2015 with my daughter by my side. I was born to the late John and Naomi Harper on December 7, 1922 in Todd County—Allensville, Kentucky, and professed my faith to God at an early age. I was united in marriage to the late Deacon Henry Smith on April 26, 1946 unitil he departed this life on January 23, 2003. We were married for 58 years.
Henry and I moved to Evansville in 1947 and joined Nazarene Missionary Baptist Church under Reverend Mitchell Banks and later became lifelong members, over 65 years, being in many organizations in the church: Senior choir, Busy Bee, Circle of Faith, under pastors Branford Utley, J.D. Marks, J.L. Trask, and my present pastor Larry Rascoe until my health failed. I was also a member of the Women’s Auxiliary at Otis Stone Post, Unit 354.
I was a domestic worker for many years for J.C. Nelson Family, Dr. Ronald, Waddell, and Attorney Jack Davis, until my health started to fail. I started cooking at the age of 12, after my mother passed, being the eldest of five siblings. I actually became a great cook and enjoyed cooking. It was always in my heart to cook for others who were in need and thoroughly enjoyed every moment. Those of you who tasted my cooking knew that everything was made from scratch.
I am preceded in death by my beloved husband, Deacon Henry Smith, my first stillborn child, Marilyn Louise Smith, and four brothers, John, Robert, Jimmy, and Charles Harper, sister-in-laws, Katherine and Lorraine Harper all of Louisville, Ky.
I leave to mourn my only loving and faithful daughter, Joyce Ann Bush (John), Newburgh, Indiana, and two step daughters JoAnne Cutts, Ford City, Pennsylvania and Henri Mae Parker (Walter) in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I have a special person who was like a daughter to me, Donna Marshall of Evansville, Indiana, who has been with me from day one when I arrived at Health South, then to Good Samaritan and my last place of residence, Hamilton Pointe. One sister, Bennie Mae Whiteside of Louisville, Kentucky, one sister-in-law, Alma Harper, Louisvill, Ky. Three grandchildren, Troy Smith (My caretaker for many years), Tamera Fields, and TaRon Fields, Evansville, In. Six great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. A cousin Rev. Charles Woolridge, Detroit Michigan and a host of nieces, nephews and many friends. I would like to thank the staff at Hamilton Pointe for my tender care and my family physician, Dr. Kenneth Yagodich.
Funeral Service will be Saturday 11AM at Nazarene Missionary Baptist Church with visitation beginning at 9am at Nazarene church until 11am service time
