Rachel Mae Higgins Bowman went to her eternal Heavenly Home on Wednesday October 21,2020. Rachel was born October 22,1945 to the late Willie Edward Higgins Sr. and Roberta "Bird" Carter Higgins. Rachel was the thirteenth of fourteen children. She was born small and lovingly was known through the years as short top, shorty and Miss Rachel from cooking class. Rachel professed her Faith and Belief in Christ at an early age and served FAITHFULLY at First Free Will Baptist Church in Henderson, KY until her health failed. She served on the Mother's board, a Missionary, Sunday School teacher, hospitality, culinary department, finance team, union district conference delegate and any wherever she was needed. She served her community in various roles the last one being a member of Community Methodist Hospital Board of Directors for several years. She attended Alves Street School and graduated from Douglas High School where she was in the English Hall of Fame. She also attended Henderson Community College. She retired form University of Kentucky Extension Service after 29 1/2 years. Rachel was known for her love of Christ and could often be found worshipping at various church services. She visited Holy Tabernacle Church of God In Christ with her sister Claudia. It was like her second home. She was a Bible Scholar and lived, talked and walked what she learned the scriptures said. She wasn't a high way driver but didn't mind walking from one end of town to the other. She was also known for her various cooking classes held all over the city of Henderson and often in the basement of her church. Rachel went into homes of consumers and helped them learn how to stretch their money and food for the month. She was very artistic and an amazing face painter. She face painted for the first Family Day in the Park held in Evansville, IN. She loved her daughter and was oh so proud of her grandchildren. She walked the campus of Tennessee State with her grandson Jay and Western KY University with her granddaughter Mia. She was preceded in death by her husband Shirley J. Bowman, brothers Willie Edward Higgins Jr., Freddie Lee Higgins Sr., Sterling Roosevelt (Duck) Higgins ,twins David and Mose Higgins, Marvin Higgins, James Weldon(Mule) Higgins, Rev. Ira Charles Higgins Sr., sisters Roberta Higgins and Mattie Elizabeth Higgins Cousins. She leaves to cherish her memory her only child Kimberly Higgins Simmons(Carl)Evansville, IN two grandchildren Ja'Keenan W. Higgins of Henderson, KY and RaeMia Higgins of Indianapolis, bonus grandchildren Carla and Michelle Simmons of Evansville, IN, Sissy and Kara Simmons of Indianapolis, IN , Kadija Sangster of Indianapolis, IN. Sisters; Claudia Belle Higgins Hay (Maurice Sr.) Henderson, KY, Velma Louise Higgins Brown, Evansville, IN, Pearl Frances Higgins Banks(Donald Sr,) friends of 50 plus years Priscilla McClure, Claire Langley McClure, caregiver Charlotte Smoot loving nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews.
Celebration of Life will be Wednesday October 28,2020 at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church 663 Dr. W.R. Brown Sr. Way Evansville, IN 47713.
