Odie Mae Haskins

January 3, 1919 — March 8, 2018

Mother Odie Mae Haskins passed away on Thursday, March 8, 2018, at the age of 99, at her home surrounded in love by her family. Mother Odie Mae Thomas – Haskins was born to Willie and Katy Thomas in Hopkinsville, KY on January 3, 1919. The family moved to the Evansville, IN area when she was five years old. She attended Lincoln School and married Thomas O. Haskins on December 24, 1936. They were married 71 years and to this union, ten children were born.
Mother Haskins accepted Christ at a young age at Nazarene Baptist Church, under the pastorship of Rev. Mitchell Banks. She later became a dedicated member of St. James Missionary Baptist Church, under the pastorship of her husband, Reverend Thomas O. Haskins. As a faithful member of St. James, she served as president of the Mothers Board and as a Sunday school teacher. She also participated in the Indiana Southern District Association as a member of the Worship Committee, the Youth Department, and the Women’s Department. In 2000, the Black Women’s Task Force awarded her Woman of the year in the Category of Religion.
Mother Haskins was a student of the Word, which she read daily. During her lifetime, she read through the Bible several times. She took the command “observe the Sabbath Day, to keep it Holy” to heart by dedicating Sunday to listening to the Word of God—on the radio, attending worship service, and watching preaching on television.

Mother Haskins loved spending time with her family. Her love also embraced the children of family members who had passed on, church family, as well as, long time friends and the “Lincoln Gardens” children.

Few people knew of Mother Haskins being well versed on political matters of the day, making associations with the politics of years gone by. Her family often teased her about the intense way she read the newspaper, front to back. She also spent many hours doing word search puzzles.

Mother Odie Mae Haskins’ Love will not cease to exist with her passing; but will live on through the lives of those whose paths crossed with hers. She will be immensely missed by her family, friends and the church community.
Mother Haskins was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Rev. Thomas O. Haskins; children, Tommye Mae Haskins Shanks and Jacqueline Haskins; and all her siblings.
