Norman Gene Carter

June 10, 1938 — June 25, 2025

Evansville

Norman Gene Carter, 87, of Boonville, Indiana, passed away on June 25, 2025, at Ascension Hospital in Evansville, Indiana.

Norman was born in Evansville, Indiana, on June 10, 1938, to the late Marion Carter Sr. and Ida Mae Wilson Carter. He was one of seventeen siblings: Lottie Harvell†, Margaret Carter†, Earl Carter† (Rose†), Lola Wall†, Marion Carter Jr.† (Patricia†), Betsy Payne, Jerry Carter†, Mildred Compton (Joe), Mary Ann Carter, Ray Carter (Sherie), Darlene Carter†, Derrick Carter†, Anthony Carter†, Susan King (Mike), Betty Carter, and Martin Carter.

On June 26, 1960, Norman was united in matrimony with Opal Mockobee Carter†. They were married for 47 years until her passing in 2008. He is survived by their five children: Joy Wallace (Anthony), Eric Carter, Norman E. Carter (Karen†), Annette Lehr, and Timothy Carter, as well as another cherished child, Alisha Robinson-Carter.

Norman was a dedicated worker and spent over 30 years at Marshall’s Glove and Safety Supply Company in Evansville, where he rose through the ranks and retired as a warehouse manager. He took pride in a job well done and was respected by his coworkers for his work ethic and leadership.

Outside of work, Norman had a lifelong love of sports. Even as an adult, he played baseball and softball for the Boonville Police Department and the Evansville Backstabbers. He was also an avid fisherman—a tradition he began with his parents and joyfully passed down to his children and grandchildren. Handy and resourceful, he enjoyed fixing up cars and repairing bikes for his loved ones. Norman had a deep love of music, especially the blues, and was known for his singing and dancing at family gatherings. But most of all, he cherished time spent with his large family—whether at a party, a cookout, or simply swapping stories in the backyard.

Norman was a devoted grandfather to Tonya York (Ashley), Tiffany Carter Blair (Bryce), Katherine Wallace, Ryan York†, Corey York, Destiny Hart, Sharonda Barnhill, and Theodious Robinson†. His legacy continues through his great-grandchildren: Jace Forgy, Jhett Carter, Montgomery Hart, Wayne Hart, Kenzie, Jaala, Kyden, Korbyn, Karmyn, K’Ya, Jermayne, Elijah, Dominic, Jordan, Lauren, Kayden, Josiah, and Kiarra. He will be deeply missed by his family including his many cousins, nieces, and nephews who loved him dearly. His memory will live on in all who knew him.
