Minnie Lee Montgomery

September 29, 1934 — October 8, 2020

On October 8, 2020, Minnie Lee Johnson Montgomery departed this earth to join her heavenly family in glory. Born in Fayette Co. Alabama to Clyde and Elizabeth Johnson, she was the 5th of 7 siblings. Raised in rural Alabama her dream was to become a nurse. She was well educated she taught her children the 3 R’s. A wonderful storyteller, Minnie would spend hours telling the stories of Brer Rabbit and LiL’ John.
Minnie was preceded in death her siblings Maurice McCollum (John), Jordan, Alonzo, Austin, Grover (Merlean) and William “Bill” Johnson (Sarah). Surviving in-laws, Jewell, (Indianapolis, IN.), Linda Riggins (Fayette, AL.), Mary Sparks, Martha Johnson (New York), Joe Neal (Katherine) (Fayette, AL.), Merlean Johnson (Fayette, AL.)
Married in 1956 to her husband of 42 years Huey T. Montgomery Sr., who also proceeds her in death. This union was blessed with 7 children, Terry Rosemary, Huey Jr. (Sherri), Judy, Kathern(deceased), of Evansville, IN. Christopher (Nancy) of Powder Springs, GA., Dunn (Yvette), of Bazemore, AL., Flossye (Evelyn) of San Diego, CA. Minnie leaves a village of nieces, nephews, grand and great grandchildren to carry on her legacy. She spent her elderly years residing with Huey Jr. He was her caregiver , chief cook and bottle washer. Her years spent with Huey was surrounded by the love from her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will be missed but never forgotten.

Minnie loved to travel both domestic and abroad. It was nothing for her to hop a greyhound, plane, or boat to travel. She had been to west coast to east coast. Viewing the wonders of the Sequoia Forest to Niagra Falls. She also traveled thru out India, seeing the Golden Temple and Taj Mahal Mom’s cultural aspects were profound. She was a homebody but not homebound.
Mom loved everyone; having the power to forgive and forget. She held her family and friends close. Her best friends for life Lurlean Agnew, Merlean Johnson. They spent countless hours quilting, gardening, and canning fruit and vegetables. She loved to make things grow. On her last visit she brought home a plum tree sapling, which is now bearing fruit. A friend and neighbor, Betty Cole would check on her daily, by phone or sitting on the porch just shooting the breeze.

She was a faithful member of the Evansville Church of Christ. Dedicated to the service of God. She rarely missed a service. Faith and good works were the way to heaven. One of her favorite saying was “Give it to God and let it go”. Her 86 years was not always easy, but she show humility and found peace and solace thru God and just living.
She worked as a textile worker for 17 years at Munsingwear Inc. (Guin, AL.). After relocating to Evansville, she was in the healthcare profession, for nearly 10 years. Retiring to take care of her husband until he passed in 1998. Devoted wife, mother, and friend. The world has lost one of its angels
