In Loving Memory of Lawrence Henry Meriwether Sr. 1934 to 2018

Lawrence Henry Meriwether Sr., affectionately known as Mert, was born in Clarksville, Tennessee
Montgomery County, on December 4, 1934 to J.B. and Shirley Mae Kendrick- Meriwether.
Lawrence was educated in the Evansville school system and he graduated from Lincoln H.S. were he excelled in academics and football. He was offered the opportunity to play at Alabama State and Tennessee State.
Lawrence married the love of his life Gornetta Meriwether in 1954.
He was a community leader and served on the Evansville Human Relations Commission. Lawrence helped to organize many community activities and scholarship programs. Lawrence was also a former member of the Masons and the Sterling Men’s Club.
Lawrence enjoyed watching NASCAR racing, Basketball, Horse Racing, and Football. Everyone knew that his favorite football team was the Patriots.
Lawrence accepted our Lord and Savior at an early age and was baptized in the Ohio River by Rev. Hatchett. He moved his membership to New Hope Baptist Church under the Late Rev W.R. Brown Sr. where he served on the Usher Board. Lawrence found his permanent church home at Memorial Baptist Church under Pastor Adrian Brooks where he served as Head Usher and a mentor. As head usher, he made sure that protocol was followed. He last ushered one week before his death at the age of 83.
Lawrence worked for Johann Funeral Home and Snow Motors. He retired from Whirlpool after over 40 years of service.
Lawrence was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 63 years Gornetta Meriwether; son, Fernando Meriwether; brothers, Gene Kendrick, John Curtis Meriwether, and Porter Meriwether (Marlene).
Lawrence is survived by his sons Lawrence H. Meriwether Jr., Torrence Meriwether, Royce Sutton (Lori), Tony Howell; daughters Darla Meriwether, Debra Meriwether-Baltzell, Keely Meriwether; brother Lee Meriwether (Carol); sisters Arrelia Coleman and Dahlia Joan Lyons (Lewis). He is also survived by an abundance of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral Service 11:00 AM Tuesday, June 19,2018 at Memorial Baptist Church 645 Canal Street Evansville, IN 47713, with visitation beginning at 9Am until service time at the church.
