Kay was born on August 27th, 1934 to Rev. Webster Bethovan Pollard and Sarah Elizabeth (Hutcherson) Pollard in Indianapolis, Indiana. Kay went home to be with the Lord February 21, 2019 surrounded in love by her family at Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Newburgh, IN.
Kay accepted Christ at the age of 14 at Pilgrim Baptist Church in Indianapolis, IN and her father, Rev. Pollard baptized her, the Rev. F.F. Jefferson, was the pastor.
Kay graduated from Crispus Attucks High School in January 1951. She attended I.U. extension (now IUPUI) at the age 16 and later graduated from Central Business College, Indianapolis, IN.
Kay married Rev. Robert L. Saunders Sr. in 1953 and five children were born. She later married Albert Hardnett in 1995.
Kay was very active in service for the Lord. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Henderson, KY. Some of her activities were as follows: Sunday school teacher for the primary class, assist. Pianist for the Jr. Choir. Kay also worked diligently in the missionary department, served as secretary of the Angelic Choir/ President of the Bethel Cathedral Choir, president of the courtesy committee, member of the Woman of Distinction, steward board birthday club, Lay department, YWA counselor and as Assist. Secretary for the Indiana State Missionary Baptist Convention Inc. Kay was also member of the mother’s board and the mass choir. Kay was also very active in community involvement ,serving as former board member of Evansville Christian Life Center and member of National Council of Negro Women-Prison Ministry committee. She was currently a board member of Mother’s at War, member of the Soul Writer’s Guild and a member of the Evansville African American Museum.
Kay never met a stranger, she loved everyone who ever needed or wanted a friend; she was a very encouraging individual, spreading sunshine wherever she went; Letting God’s light shine through her.
Her hobbies were; writing poetry, singing and sending encouraging cards to those who needed a lift. She was a prayer warrior.
Kay retired from Amax Coal Company after 15 years in Chandler, IN. and the Indiana State Department of Health, 16 years, as both secretary and receptionists, and finally the Vanderburgh County Prosecutors Office until March of 2018 in the call center,
Her mother, father, and brothers, Jeremiah Burt Carver Pollard and Irvin Henry Pollard preceded her in death as well as her husband Albert Hardnett.
Kay leaves to cherish her memory; four darling daughters, Karen Denise Harper, Angela (Kenneth) Watson, Pamela Jean (Timothy) Jackson, Karmyn Nichelle Saunders, and one handsome son, Rev. Robert Lee Saunders Jr. (Patrice), two sisters; Martha Ann Pollard Vance, Marie Pollard, and sister in law Rose Pollard.
20 grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and extended host of “adopted” children and grandchildren, and friends.
Visitation be 10am until 12pm Saturday ,March 2,2019 at Memorial Baptist
Funeral service will be Noon,Saturday,at Memorial Baptist Church. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery.
