Jesse "Big Daddy" Daniel Davis

October 15, 1942 — October 9, 2021

Jesse Daniel Davis, 79, of Evansville, passed away peacefully Saturday, October 9, 2021, at Ascension St Vincent Hospital.

Jesse was born in Henderson, Kentucky on October 15, 1942, to the late Matthew Davis and late Jessie Mae Armstead (Johnson maiden name). He was blessed with two mothers, the late Dorman Hayden (Smith maiden name). He was raised in Henderson and Robards KY, and Evansville IN.

He accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at the Nazarene Missionary Baptist Church, Evansville, IN.

Jesse was a Lincoln High School Graduate, Evansville IN - Class of 1960. He played football for the Lincoln Lions wearing jersey #70. He was also a Lincoln Lion shot putter.

He retired from CSX/L&N Railroad after 45+ years of exemplary service. Previously worked at Whirlpool and Gus Doerner Sports.

Jesse was a kind spirited man always treating people with dignity and respect.

He was a "Home Engineer" for ALL interior and exterior appliances... fixing everything from Cars, Washing Machines, Hot Water Heaters, Leaf blowers, etc. If he did not have the necessary parts, Duct tape was his GO TO and remarkably, it worked well.

He was an AVID Fisherman, travelling to Minnesota, Canada, and beyond with his brother Archie, nephews, and friends. He was known for his outstanding fishing skills on the Ohio River, homemade bait, and unique fishing poles. He slept and still caught fish. He would fall in the water and still caught fish. He would always walk away with the largest catch. He was an AVID hunter and very skillful with recurve and compound bows. Jesse was featured in several newspaper articles with trophy bucks. He was a BEAST on the grill....Ribs, Steaks, Smoked meats also grilling for local churches and his beloved family. He would also travel with the Railroad as a top chef preparing meals for the wrecker crew. Cooking/Grilling for his family was his passion. He loved watching NFL Football, NBA Basketball, Hunting, and Fishing shows. He captured the hearts of many with his jovial personality and connected with people from all walks of life. He was Loving, Kind, Compassionate, Funny and never met a stranger. His greatest love, however, was his Family and Friends. He touched many lives through his many acts of kindness.


Jesse is survived by his daughters: Scherilla Holland (Greg); Felicia Davis-Sutton (LaRonn/ "Reggie"); Bianca Green (Richard); and Alexandria Fleming
sons Carlos Garnett, Sr. (Tara); Bryce Fleming, all of Evansville IN. A host of grandkids and great grandkids.Siblings: Grace Polk, Evansville IN; Richard Polk (Roberta), Tulsa OK; Shirley Randle (Amos) Marion IN; Dorothy Morse (Richard), Henderson KY; Lewis Armstead (Patricia), Henderson KY; Pastor Harlan Armstead (Sharon), Henderson KY; Rodney Davis (Cathy), Marion IN; Gloria Davis, Sister-in-Law (Archie Davis Sr., deceased) Marion IN; Amy Thomas, Sister-in-Law, Henderson, KY; Charlie Anderson Sr., Brother-In-Law, Evansville IN. Portia Cook, former wife, and mother of his children Uncle Leonard "Boat" Johnson, Henderson KY, Uncle Davis, Indianapolis IN, Aunt Lottie Swope, Evansville IN
Also survived by a host of Family and Friends.

Preceded in death by his parents, brothers Archie Davis, Sr., James Polk, and Jason Armstead. Dorothy "Dottie" Carter, companion and mother of his children.

Services 11AM on October 22, 2021, at the Liberty Missionary Baptist Church, 701 Oak Street, Evansville IN 47713. Visitation 10AM until service time at the church. Arrangements handled by Osborne Funeral Home, Evansville IN
