Edna Augusta Lee Leachman Young, of Evansville, Indiana, got her wings on Sunday, October 4, 2026. She was born to the late Charles “Giles” Leachman and Lockie Elizabeth (Jackson) Leachman

Edna had a caring nature and was always helping people, including strangers, when her mother was a resident of Red Banks Nursing Home, Edna would visit and not only tend to her mother’s needs but also to the needs of the other residents. Red Banks Nursing Home offered her a job and she accepted. Edna was also her late husband, Harold Young’s care giver for several years before his death. Edna was part of the first all women work crew that the City of Henderson Parks Dept. hired. Edna worked at Ellis Park for several years also.

Anyone that knew Edna knew she was a good cook and a perfectionist housekeeper. If you messed up even a rug on her floor and tried to straighten it up, she knew. She always knew how she had everything and in what order. When she cooked people loved stopping by and getting a plate. Especially around the holidays. They loved her famous mac and cheese. When you drove down the street you knew exactly which house was Her’s, her yard and porch was full of décor and flowers. Edna was either working in her yard or sitting on her front porch. It could be 115 heat index, and Edna would be on that front porch. And if you really knew Edna then you also knew she said exactly what was on her mind. Cuss words and all (LOL), but Edna also had a sense of humor and loved cracking jokes that kept you laughing. Edna just loved talking to people rather she knew you or not. When Edna decorated for Christmas, she did it big. The inside of her house was full of Christmas décor and a well decorated tree. The outside of her house and fence was full of lights and décor on the porch and the yard. The Evansville Courier wrote a story about her and her lights. And she was so proud of that article.

On the streets Edna was known as Auntie or Grandma, and in Columbia Nursing home, she was known as Granny or Grandma, mind you she wasn’t kin to any of these people (LOL)but that is how she touched so many lives. Edna spent the last 16 months of her life in Columbia Nursing Home. The aides loved her. Even if an aide were working on another floor they would always come to The Cottage and visit.

Edna was preceded in death by both parents. Her husband, Harold Young, sisters, Edith Robertson, Eugenia Vincent, Juila Mae Sloan, Drucilla Jones, Shirley McGuire and Ethel Leachman, brothers, Minor “Mac Ivory” McFarland Sr., and Wiliam Henry Leachman Sr.

She leaves behind two daughters, Gail Livas Johnson and Jimetta Williams of Henderson, two sons Marcus and Hawana Williams of Evansville, Indiana, brother, Joe Leachman of Indianapolis, Indiana, granddaughter, Melanie Carpenter of Henderson, KY., grandsons, Donya and Keaya Williams of Evansville, IN., 4 great grandkids, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousin and friends.

The family would like Thank Gentiva Hospice and a special Thank you La’Quandria “LQ” Lloyd and Fallon. Two workers at Columbia Nursing Home, your professionalism and unwavering work ethics never changed. The care, respect, and dignity that was showed for our mom and every resident there speaks volumes and we will be forever grateful.
