Derek E. Baker Sr. , 57, of Evansville IN (formerly of Denver CO) was born November 23, 1963 to Virginia R. Baker and Roy Lee Wallace in Evansville IN. Derek was the oldest of 4 children. Derek lived in Indianapolis IN where he attended grade school and high School before relocating back to Evansville IN in 1982. Derek started amateur boxing with the local boxers in the late 1980's and won several boxing matches.
Derek accepted Christ at an early age and attended Nazarene Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. J.L. Trask Sr. After the passing of his brother Cpl. Frederick Lee Baker, Derek moved to Denver CO in 1995. Derek relocated back to Evansville IN in 2006 and joined the Little Valley Missionary Baptist Church where he attended Sunday school and sang in the church choir before moving back to Denver CO in 2015. Derek had worked various jobs throughout his lifetime. Derek worked as package handler for Fed Ex Corp in Denver CO prior to moving back to Evansville IN.
Derek was an avid fisher. He loved sitting on the river banks enjoying nature as he fished. He also enjoyed playing cards, watching comedy movies and spending time with family and close friends. He was known for cracking jokes just out the blue. "Keep on, I'm gonna knock you out" he would say when we would mess with him. Derek loved life and he never let grass grow under his feet. He was always on the go.
Derek was preceded in death by his mother Virginia R. Baker, father Roy Lee Wallace, brother Cpl. Frederick Lee Baker and an aunt whom helped raise him, Elizabeth Mason.
Derek is survived by one son Derek E. Baker Jr., two sisters Marybelle Baker and Latorya Baker, nephews LaQuante Baker, Keenan Compton, De'Vonte Thomas, and LaZarion McBaine, one niece Elani Johnson, his best friend Ronnie Eastwood, all of Evansville IN and a host of family and friends.
Visitation will be Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2021 from 11 til Noon with funeral to follow at Noon at Osborne Funeral Home. 702 Gum Street, Evansville, IN.
