David Wildermuth Payne Jr., of Evansville, was called home to be with the Lord on August 10, 2022. He was born December 3, 1948, in Evansville, to the late David W. and Elaine Payne, Sr.
He was a graduate of Central High School where he excelled in football and track. He retired from George Koch and Sons after thirty-five years. He was a member of Sts. Mary & John Parish where he served as a president of the parish council, choir member, Eucharistic minister, literature ministry, soup kitchen, and yard person. The church honored him with both the Brute Award and Mother Teresa Service Award. He was a 33rd Degree Mason of Evansville Masonic Lodge #5, Shriner’s Cawthar #118, and a member of Black Jack Motorcycle Club.
David Jr. was preceded in death by brothers Derek, Marlon, Mario Payne and sister ;Deborah Cleckley.
He is survived by his wife Charlene Mechelle of 55 years; son David Payne III and daughter Myia Payne; grandchildren Myiona, Enriko and Angelstar Brown, Antonio Jr. and Aniyia Handley-Payne and great grandchildren; brothers Broderick Payne (April) Suisun City, CA, George Payne of Evansville; sisters Mona Bowling, Cherie Payne, Tracy Collins, Ingrid Cates (Greg), Laurie Payne, Sheila Higgins, Dina Payne all of Evansville, an aunt Ethelena Taylor, sister-in-law Valorie Payne, goddaughter TiMikko Coates Sanders; and a host of relatives and friends.
Visitation will be Thursday August 18, 2022 from 5 PM – 7 PM with Masonic Rites at Osborne Funeral Home. Mass of Christian burial will be Friday August 19, 2022 9:30 AM, Sts. Mary & John Parish, 613 Cherry St., officiated by Father Benny A. Chacko, with burial in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
