Daryl Edward Dorace Schafer, of Evansville, passed away on Wednesday, September 22, 2021 at Ascension St Vincent.
Daryl was born in Evansville, Indiana on February 5, 1953 to Edward P.H. and Viola L. (Mulzer) Schafer. He graduated from Bosse High School in 1971 and attended Ivy Tech in 1972 studying Automotive Technician and then again in 1988 completing studies of Home Construction Basics. Daryl enlisted in the Indiana National Guard Co A1-152 INF from 1975-81 and HHB 1st Battalion 163D FA from 1982-97 and was honorably discharged retiring after 20 years of service earning a rank of Staff Sergeant and several decorations and medals. His battalion number is the same battalion number as his father Edward P.H. Schafer who served in WW2. Daryl worked at Key Ford and then became a lifelong employee for the City of Evansville for 40 years working for Locust Hill Cemetery and then Water Works where he finally retired in 2015. He was baptized and confirmed at St Paul's United Church of Christ. Daryl is a member of Calvary Temple Assembly of God.
Daryl loved attending the many activities of band and sports of his children, grandchildren, niece and nephew. He was an avid car guy who loved cruising and attending car shows. He was willing to help anyone out whether it was a ride to a doctor's appointment or to the grocery store. Daryl loved everyone and you became more than just a friend, you became family.
Daryl is survived by his 3 children, son, Brandon E. Schafer (Jenny L. Schafer); daughter, Jocelyn M. Schafer; son, Alex D. Schafer (Leann I. Schafer); his mother, Viola L. Mulzer; his sister, Karen L.H. Chamberlain (Lee Chamberlain); grand children, Klaire Schafer, Ciearra Johnston, Jack Schafer, Ellie Schafer, Kyler Schafer, Caleb Barnett, Jayden Hall, Zoie Hall, Larissa Hall, Elle Hall, AJ Schafer; niece, Laurel K.E. Nordyke (Nathan P. Nordyke); nephew, Grant J.E. Chamberlain
Daryl was preceded in death by his father, Edward P.H. Schafer.
Public visitation with closed casket is from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm on September 29 at Osborne Funeral Home with a private family burial following at Alexander Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Soothing Stripes Project, a nonprofit group that uses animals to help veterans cope with PTSD. Daryl served in Public Relations with this project.
