Darnell McClain, 78, peacefully transitioned into God’s hands on Thursday, August 31, 2023, at her home in Evansville, IN. She was surrounded by her family, friends, China, her faithful furbaby, and cherished memories. While our loss is immeasurable, we find solace in celebrating the beautiful life she lived and the incredible impact she had on each of us.
Darnell was born on March 3, 1945, in Evansville, Indiana to Wanda Dawson-Turner. Anna McCauley, her aunt, helped raised her into her adult years. Darnell was a remarkable woman of God whose kindness and warmth touched the lives of everyone she encountered. Her gentle smile and nurturing presence brought comfort and joy to our family, creating a home filled with love and laughter. Her faith and family always came first. She was the embodiment of strength and resilience, and her unwavering trust in Jesus, will forever inspire us.
Darnell was not only a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, family member and friend, but also a pillar of support. She provided godly wisdom for all who sought her counsel. Her patience, empathy, and ability to truly listen are true testaments to her character. Countless stories from family and friends reflect the impact she had on shaping lives and the lasting memories she created.
Darnell was married to the late Mark McClain. She was also married to the late Homer Gott, who they shared 7 children: Deidra Fletcher, Gregory Gott (who preceded her in death), Dale Gott (who preceded her in death), Jeffrey Gott, Duane Gott, Denise Gott-Melton, and Demond Gott as well as sons-in-law, George Fletcher, Jr., and Chris Mitchell. Darnell leaves behind 12 grandchildren, whom she loved dearly and was blessed to see them grow into adults: Marjon Fletcher, Donyee’ Fletcher, Danielle Fletcher, Hoseau Gott, Malon Gott, Shaquil Cabel, Tiffiny Gott, Kim Gott, James Gott, Jeff Gott, Jr., Lakeiya Gott, and Jaylen Gott. Darnell cherished her 1st cousins, who she considered to be her brothers and sister: John Colin Vardiman, Dennis Vardiman (who preceded her in death), and Sondra Francis (who preceded her in death). Darnell also leaves behind a host of great grandchildren whom she truly adored, as well as nieces, nephews, friends, former colleagues and her close “sister friends”(Rose Mitchell, Gwen Lester, Linda Kenner, Diane White, Pat Gray, Diane Stone).
As we bid farewell to Darnell, let us remember the life, love, laughter and important lessons she has brought into our lives. Her legacy will live on through the countless lives she touched and the values she instilled in each of us. She taught us the importance of family bonds, the strength of unity, and faith in God.
Visitation will be Wednesday 10 to 11a.m. with funeral to follow at 11:00 a.m. all at Liberty Missionary Baptist Church. Burial is at Locust Hill.
