Charles “Sleepy” LaGrone was born in Evansville, Indiana on June 4, 1929 and died March 2, 2018, at the age of 88.
Charles attended Lincoln School and later earned a degree from Lockyear Business College. He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War. Charles later worked for Chrysler, Whirlpool, and the Evansville Prosecutor’s Office. He was known as a good cook. His specialty was bar-b-que. Charles was an avid bowler and later, enjoyed the game of golf. In his early years, he was a pitcher for The Evansville Tigers, the local Negro semi-pro baseball team. He was a faithful member of New Hope Baptist Church.Charles was preceded in death by his mother Brinder Bounds, his father and step-mother, John and Mary LaGrone, his infant son Michael, his former wife Jacqueline LaGrone, and his brother Alphonso “Pete” Watkins.
He is survived by his children Cornel LaGrone (Madeline), Lisa LaGrone Sebree (Clifton), Antonio LaGrone, Yolanda LaGrone Clemons (Edward), Vincent LaGrone, Charles LaGrone Jr., Rodney LaGrone, and Jennifer LaGrone Kimball (Anthony), cousin Electra Bounds Shane, several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and “a host of friends.”
