Bobbie Jean Mitchell Gray, born on July 9, 1948 to Raymond “Lemon” Mitchell and Josephine Stockton-Strobert Mitchell in Jacksonville, Florida, went home to be with the Lord April 5, 2020 at Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Evansville, Indiana.
Bobbie Jean was a faithful woman, a devoted member of Liberty Missionary Baptist Church and was beloved by her community. She never met a stranger and was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need, whether it be with food, drink, clothing, shoes, or something as simple as a prayer and a kind word.
Bobbie Jean was a dedicated employee who held many jobs throughout her life. She retired from the Drury Inn but soon found retired life boring and began working part-time at Methodist Temple and then for Evansville Vanderburgh School District at McGary Middle School.
She was preceded in death by her daughter Chenora Gray; siblings Mary Williams and JoAnn Russ; and dear friend Edith Quinn.
Bobbie Jean leaves to cherish many wonderful memories her husband of 33 years Percy Porter Sr.; her children Robert Mitchell (Teresia), Robin Mitchell-Lawrence (Fred), Sheena Gray (Montoi), DeCarlos Samuels (Amy) and Michael Irvin; stepson Percy Porter Jr.; sisters Linda Harvell (David) and Barbara Ann Harris; brothers Raymond Mitchell and John Mitchell (Esmerelda); grandchildren T’Ayra, Ryan, Terrance, Orterius, DeCarlos Jr., McClellan, Ra’Niah, Denasia, DaRay, Cymone, and DeShawn; great-grandsons Ryan Jr, Khamarion and Rylan; sisters-in-law Patricia Ann Gray, Mary Stewart and Becky Porter; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Bobbie Jean was tenacious and full of life, with a fiercely humous personality and an infectious laugh. She is dearly loved and her departure will be felt deeply by those who were blessed to have known her.
A Graveside Funeral Service will be held Friday at 11:00 a.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery.
