Betty Meriwether was born on September 2, 1934 to Rev. Charles E. and Roberta Douglas -- former Pastor and First Lady of Mt. Olive Galilee Missionary Baptist Church in Evansville, IN for 35 years. Betty was called to rest peacefully on the November 19, 2016.
Betty joined 16-year-old Robert Meriwether in holy matrimony when she was the tender age of 14, on June 19, 1948. Their young love captured media attention as they were the youngest couple married in Evansville. Media interest was reignited when they renewed their wedding vows after 50 years on July 2, 1999 -- showing that true love stands the test of time.
Betty and her husband relocated to CA in 1964 to provide a better life for their seven children. Betty was a devoted homemaker until her youngest started school. She then took work outside the home to support Robert in purchasing a home and providing a stable life for their family. Betty retired as a Nurse's Aid from Malinda Nursing Home in Lynwood, CA, before moving back to Evansville to care for her aging parents.
Betty accepted Christ early in life and was water baptized in the Ohio River as a member of Little Valley under Rev. Boozer. She served in Mt. Olive Galilee Missionary BC as a Mother, choir member, Mission Circle, and other auxiliaries. Betty moved her membership to Mt. Pleasant Missionary BC under the pastorship of Rev. Robert Saunders where she was the epitome of a Mother and choir member until her home going.
Betty was known most for her unconditional Christian kindness, dedication, faithfulness and encouraging words. Her radiant smile would light up the room. Her hug would warm your soul. She was energetic, creative, and always there to lend a hand, an ear, and let you know she loves you more.
Betty was preceded in her call to heaven by her husband of 57 years, Robert Lee Meriwether; two children Carolyn Meriwether of Los Angeles, CA; Betty Ann Hicks of Compton, CA., her parents Rev. Charles E. Douglas and Roberta Douglas, Richard Douglas (brother); Stephan Meriwether & Troy Holmes (grandsons); Nazier Brown (great grandson).
Betty leaves to mourn, five children: Terry Meriwether of Los Angeles, CA; Alberta Meriwether of Lancaster, CA; Quentin Meriwether and his significant other, Rose Berry of Princeton, IN; Lynda Meriwether of Evansville, IN; Sonya Ballew and her husband Anthony Ballew Sr. of Altadena, CA.; three sisters Gayle Garrett of Evansville, IN; Christy Bowman and Twonia Holmes of Benton Harbor, MI; 19 grand children and a host of great grandchildren, family and friends.
