Barbara Jean Cheatem (Bobbie Jean) was born in Evansville, Indiana July 24, 1939, to the late Abram Sr. and Nannie Cheatem.
Barbara graduated from Lincoln Douglas High School in 1957. She went to mortuary school and worked at Gaines funeral home for a short time. Barbara was baptized and a faithful member of Liberty Baptist Church. She was known for her beautiful voice and participation in various singing ministries and community choirs throughout the tristate.
Barbara made her way to New York and her place of residence. She joined Gethsemane Baptist church in 1971. She began an Eastern Star in 1975. She always had a love for children. Many children came in and out of her home day and night. She cared for them anytime a parent needed assistance. She retired from Tremont Community Council as a teacher’s aide and a home childcare provider in 1996. She was certified as a nurse’s aide and took care of disabled children during most weekends.
Barbara returned to Evansville in 2003; she became a part of the Memorial church family. She enjoyed “The People’s Church.” She was not a stranger to anyone. She loved her church and church family. Most of all the youth meant everything to her. She was a member of the choir and went to Sunday school in between her medication break (cigarettes). She will always be remembered by her loving personality and smile.
Barbara led a passionate life and enjoyed entertaining. Her favorite things would be walking around the house with a broom and singing with her cigarette hanging, grocery shopping, enjoying lots of company, reading books/magazines, and watching CNN. She was known for her quick wit and humor, making her a joy to be around. Barbara was a giving individual with a heart of gold; but you may have got cussed out, so most folks knew not to cross her!!! The love she had for people's words cannot explain. Her outgoing friendly personality and devotion to neighbors and others will be remembered.
Proceeding Barbara (Bobbie Jean) in death were her parents Abram Sr and Nannie Cheatem. Siblings ~ Willie, Hugh, Louise, Vivian, Abram Jr, Dent, Robert, Larry (her running buddy), Leroy, Paul, and Freddie~ niece and nephew Kim and Jr Cheatem.
Barbara leaves to cherish her loving memories: Her daughter Melody Sawyer Haskin and her husband (Alfred) she admired so much. She also leaves 2 granddaughters Chiani Murray and Da’Lani Brown. She had them spoiled and would do anything in the world for them, (and you dare not open your mouth). Her favorite line, “It’s Not your business!”
