Andrew Lee "Big Drew" Hughes Sr. 82, of Evansville passed away On Saturday at Deaconess Hospital Surrounded in the love of his family. Andrew was born in Clay Kentucky on November 11, 1933 son of the late Gertrude and Fred Weston And Downy Howard Hughes. He was a graduate of the Lincoln High School class of 1952, after which he attended Lockyear College. He met the love of his life Agnes Edwards and in 1953 they united in holy matrimony and to this union eight children were born.
Big Drew was a proud Army Veteran and a member of Otis Stone Post 354. Andrew was a faithful member of St. Mary and John Catholic Church in Evansville for many years serving as a founding member of the Friends of St John’s and he was also a member of the Lincoln Clark Douglas Alumni .
Andrew worked for Sterling Brewery for several years afterwards he retired from EVSC. Andrew was also the proud proprietor of Big Drew and Crew Painting, whose staff consisted of his sons and a daughter. Andrew enjoyed fishing hunting playing cards and the race track. “Big Drew” was loving husband, a great father and a good friend to many and he leaves great memories to them all.
Andrew was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Robert Morgan, Robert Lee and James Lee and his son Cornell Hughes.
He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife Agnes Edward-Hughes, four daughters Pamela Mitchell, Patrice Denea’ Jackson (Tony), Carla Hughes Dozier (Pat) all of Evansville, and Thelma Scott of Indianapolis, IN, 5 sons Andrew Hughes Jr (Carla), Anthony R. Hughes Sr (Debra) all of Evansville, Marvin Hughes Sr (Cynthia), Huntsville, AL and Ricardo Hughes (Darlene) Milwaukee, WI, 24 grandchildren, a host of great grand, 3 great-great grand. As well as a host of nieces, nephews, extended daughters and sons, friends and family.
Funeral service will be Saturday 11:00 at St Mary and John Church 617 Bellemeade Ave, with visitation Friday 5-8 at the church.
Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Park
