Alfonso Lee "Butch" Shamell

January 2, 1958 — June 12, 2025

Evansville

Alfonso Lee “Butch” Shamell, 67 went home to be with the Lord on June 12, 2025. He was born in Evansville, Indiana to Juanita Smith and Charles Baxton and raised by Warren Shamell.

Butch attended St. John’s and graduated from Central High School. He worked at Alcan and SRG/Guardian until his illness prevented him to do so. Butch worked and served for the LORD at Zion Missionary Baptist Church.

He accepted the LORD at an early age. Reading the Bible was a daily early morning ritual. Butch was also a servant of the LORD as a mighty musician, an excellent base guitar player at New Beginnings, ZMBC and several other churches.

Butch took pleasure in fishing, boating, eating (rice, cranberry sauce, my peach cobbler) and definitely playing his base guitars. It was his passion! He also enjoyed just sitting in the swing on the porch. He loved to smile and tell life stories. Our blended family consisted of many grandchildren, great grandchildren and he loved them all!! He loved watching the Indianapolis Colts and LeBron James. And he loved without a doubt “Champ” our pet dog!

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sibling Charles (Joann) Reed. Butch leaves to mourn his passing his loving wife Karen, sons Shawndale, Alfonso (Wendy), Maurice, Marlon (Rose); stepchildren January (Anthony), Karese (Christopher) and Desmon; his siblings John (Sharon)Shamell and Gloria Shamell along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and great friends.
